Our team of camping professionals has over 100 years of combined experience. Camp is our life and we can not wait to share our love for camping with you!
David Fried (“Fried”) Executive Director & General Camp Director email@example.com 786-344-3726Fried spent much of his adolescence and beyond at Camp Shalom. He continued on in leadership roles and has been Camp Director since 1999. He is incredibly accomplished in the world recreation, youth and adult sports. He’s also a member of the American Camp Association. David is the founder of Prime Time Sports (many of you might be familiar with his JCC programs) and founder and coach of the Mo Steel Flag Football Team (nationally and international recognized). In recent years he coached the US Women’s National Flag Football Team. Fried was also the Director of Athletics at The Michael-Ann Russell JCC in Aventura, Florida for many years. Fried spends all year prepping for the upcoming summer. He is known throughout camp for many reasons, some of which are his incredibly in-depth and on-trend evening programs as well as his meticulously coordinated all-camp competition Saturdays…not to mention the most amazing Maccabi Games and Color War competitions known to man! David’s wife, Dr. Jenn Paskewich Fried is well known in her field of Speech Language Pathology. She will be on camp off and on throughout the summer as a General Camp Mom & our Resident Speech Language Pathologist. Fried’s passion is camp and everyday he spends in Orange Springs with his camp family is a special day for him!Today, Fried works year-round with Camp Shalom. He is constantly working with new and old camp families and is always thinking of fun, new programming that will surely have everyone on camp happy!
Jewish Sleep-Away Camp is in Sarah’s bones! She was born and bred into a “Camp Family”, as both of her parents attended overnight camps, her Dad was a URJ Song Leader and her mom is a professional in the field of Jewish Education. Sarah’s childhood was filled with Jewish Culture, Ruach, Jewish Education, Hebrew, Tzedakah, Shabbat, Jewish Holidays, Jewish Music…and of course CAMP! At the age of 10 Sarah embarked on her first summer at Jewish Sleep-Away Camp, which quickly became the next 11 years of her life, as she returned through the age of 21. Though Sarah did not grow up at Camp Shalom, she was connected with Shalom long before she formally met Mike. Her younger brother is a die-hard Alumni Shalomer, having spent 10 summers eating, sleeping and breathing Camp Shalom! Sarah is actually thankful to have a separate childhood experience, as it allows her to look at Shalom from somewhat of an unbiased, outside point of view. Her passion for Informal Jewish Education and penchant for “teachable moments” along with some guidance, steered her in the direction of a Social Work Degree. Which ultimately led her to the non-profit sector, specifically the Jewish Federation of the Greater Palm Beaches and the Miami Beach JCC. In 2009 that all changed, when Sarah and Mike were married. After which they began the process of transitioning into ownership and operation of Camp Shalom. Sarah is constantly researching throughout the world of Jewish Camping & General Youth Programs and staying in touch with colleagues within the field. She’s also an active member of the American Camp Association. Sarah is thrilled to part of the Camp Shalom Family. She works all year round on every aspect of Camp… Her number 1 priority is to create “the summer of a lifetime”, each and every summer.
Shelley & Big D founded Camp Shalom of Central Florida in 1970 and they opened the gates to 168 Camp Shalom Trail in June of 1971. Shelley’s background in Education and David’s career in Commercial Real Estate proved to be the perfect mix for camp ownership. They have four children, all of whom attended Camp Shalom and went on to marry spouses who they met in some way through camp. For 40 years, Shelley, with Big D’s support, operated the camp through many decades and much success. Now, as they sit back and let the 2nd generation lead the way, they are thoroughly enjoying their newfound title of Camp Founders. Without a doubt, their most beloved role yet, is that of our Resident Camp Grandparents.
Camp Shalom directors carefully select the individuals who comprise our upper staff, for their interest and commitment to working with children. All applicants must undergo a full application process which includes a thorough written application, interview (preferably in person), reference and background checks. Our Activity Specialists are well respected in their respective fields and we are lucky to have them on camp each summer. Camp Directors hand-pick the young adults who make up our amazing group of counselors. In most cases, counselors submit a written application, they are then interviewed in person (or video interview). Thorough reference and background checks are done as well. Each staff member is chosen based on maturity, expertise, experience, enthusiasm and much more. Being a private, small, family-owned camp gives us the ability to know each and every camper. The entire staff, from camp owners and directors to counselors, LIT’s and specialists will know you and your child! Staff members works hard to provide campers with the best summer of their lives!In addition to the Camp Director and Owners, our upper staff of adults include 2 Camp Moms, 2 Assistant Camp Directors, Office Manager, Logistics Manager, Head of Waterfront, 3 Health Care Professionals, Social Media Coordinator and of course our professionals who head up our waterski, ropes and art programs.
